The type of sweetener mattersTable sugar is low FODMAP in normal portions. Honey, high-fructose corn syrup and sweeteners ending in “-itol” have a clearer route to gas or loose stool.
FODMAP readVaries
Sucrose is low FODMAP. Excess fructose and polyols can be high.
01
Two ways it can happen
01
Sorbitol, xylitol and maltitol are polyols. The small intestine does not absorb much of them, so they can reach gut bacteria.
02
Desserts also combine large portions with fat or lactose. “Sugar” may be taking the blame for the whole recipe.
02
Portion changes the test
A teaspoon in tea and a bag of sugar-free sweets are different digestive tests.
03
Run a clean meal test
Read the ingredient list, then compare plain table sugar with the sweetener you suspect. Keep the serving modest and change one item.
Snap each meal, tap how you feel an hour later, and get a ranked Trigger Report based on your own logs.
Sources and scope
We use these references for the general digestive mechanisms on this page. Food tolerance still depends on your portion, preparation and health history.
This page provides general information, not a diagnosis. Talk to a clinician about severe or persistent bloating, vomiting, blood in your stool, fever or unexplained weight loss. Ask about celiac testing before removing gluten from your diet.
